What is it?
It's an all-in-one mono laser printer that can print, copy and scan, as well as fax without needing to be connected to a PC. It's very similar to the Brother MFC-L2730DW, but has slightly more memory (256MB compared to 128MB for the MFC-L2730DW) and can do double-sided faxing.
What's it great at?
Printing superb quality black text documents at a fast rate and an affordable cost.
How much will it cost to print?
If you want to keep your printing costs very low then this model will be right up your street. It gets the full five-stars for printing costs, and deservedly so. We estimate that you'll only shell out £19.68 per year, based on average printing of around 30 pages per month.
How well does it print?
The black-text documents this printer turns out look crisp, bold and professional. It's fast, too - a five-page letter takes 21 seconds. The speed continues on pages of office spreadsheets and images mixed with text, but the quality doesn't impress as with black-text prints.
How well does it scan and copy?
The scanner is easy to use and produces decent quality scans overall. However, we noticed that scanned photos can seem rather dark and murky. The copier is fine to use, although don't expect incredible quality copies to drop into the tray.
Is there anything I should watch out for?
As it prints automatically on both sides of the page, you can save on paper. Alongside the 250-sheet paper cassette, it has a 50-sheet automatic document feeder on the top, which is useful for multiple page copies, scans and faxes. Due to the design of the printer there's quite restricted access to the paper path if you have a paper jam.
Is there anything else I should know?
With both wi-fi and ethernet connections available, you connect the printer to the internet either wirelessly or with a cable, if it's close enough to your internet router. It has various wireless printing features, including AirPrint for network printing from iPads, iPhones and Mac computers. Cloud Print is useful if you use Google programs such as Gmail, and you can download the free Brother printing app to your phone or tablet.
Should I buy it?
Yes. It certainly isn't the lowest-priced model we've tested, but it's very affordable to run and turns out superb black-text documents and letters. It has some useful features and functions, too.

What is it?
It's an all-in-one mono laser printer that can copy, scan and print, as well as send faxes without needing a PC (useful for tasks such as submitting a repeat prescription request).
What's it great at?
Printing top-quality, black-text documents at a fast rate and a low cost.
How much will it cost to print?
Keeping your printing costs low is an essential part of buying a new printer – and there aren't many laser printers better than this Brother. It gets the full five stars for printing costs, and deservedly so. According to our calculations, a year's worth of printing around 30 pages a month will only set you back £18.72.
How well does it print?
This Brother printer is simply superb at printing black text. Letters look crisp and sharp, and a five-page document will be in the tray in only 17 seconds.
The fast speed continues with other material - a page of graphics and bar charts takes just 10 seconds and a printed web page a staggering 18 seconds. However, the quality isn't quite as good.
How well does it scan and copy?
The built-in scanner is easy to use and turns out decent scanned representations of your chosen material. However, scanned photos look rather dark. The copier has some issues, with mono copies looking light. The printer does double-sided scans and copies.
Is there anything I should watch out for?
This printer doesn't have an automatic document feeder, which can be useful for multiple page copies, scans or faxes. Plus, there's restricted access to the paper path if you need to clear a paper jam. But it automatically prints on both sides of the page so that you can save paper.
Is there anything else I should know?
We’ve made this model an Eco Buy because it’s not power-hungry or thirsty for ink, and has good print quality. Head to how we test printers to find out more about our Eco Buy printers.
You get wi-fi, so you can connect to the internet wirelessly (although not with a cable as it lacks ethernet). Entering your wi-fi password is a tedious process, but you should only have to do it once.
It has various wireless printing features, including AirPrint for network printing from iPads, iPhones and Mac computers. Cloud Print is useful if you use Google programs, such as Gmail, and you can download the free Brother printing app to your phone or tablet.
Should I buy it?
Yes. Overall, this is a fantastic mono laser Best Buy and Eco Buy that's built for being productive.

What is it?
It's what's known as a 'all in one' printer, meaning it can print, copy, scan and also fax. It's a pretty sizeable machine, so you'll need a fair amount of space in your study or office to accommodate it.
What's it great at?
Printing superb quality black-text documents at a fast rate and an affordable cost.
How much will it cost to print?
Although this laser printer isn't the cheapest to buy, it's very cheap to run. We estimate that it will cost only around £16.20 a year printing around 30 pages per month, or just under £50 over three years. It'll cost you just 17p for 10 black text prints turned out in one go.
These days, many ink tank printers beat laser printers like this one when it comes to printing costs - but very few can print such sharp black text.
How well does it print?
It's superb at printing black-text documents - they look crisp and professional, and a five-page letter takes just 18 seconds to turn out. It's equally as fast at printing spreadsheets and images, but the quality dips noticeably, particularly with spreadsheets.
How well does it scan and copy?
The built-in scanner is pretty decent, although we feel that scanned photos are rather dark. This is even more noticeable on the copier. Colour copies in particular could be much better.
Is there anything I should watch out for?
Your prints will automatically be double-sided so that you won't waste paper (you can always switch to single sided if you prefer). The printer has a useful 50-sheet document feeder for more easily scanning and copying multiple page documents and files. You can also use the printer to send a fax without needing a PC.
Is there anything else I should know?
You can either connect the printer to the internet with an ethernet cable, or wirelessly using the built-in wi-fi. We found that entering a wi-fi password was rather tedious due to the control system, but you should only have to do this once.
After getting the printer online, you can use network printing features such as Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print. You can also download the free Brother printing app to your smartphone or tablet.
Should I buy it?
Yes. There are a few flaws, but overall this is an impressive laser printer with plenty of features and functions. Most important of all, it prints in decent quality at a low cost.
